ALL NEW – SIMPLY THE BEST Season 11!

Hello everyone! We dedicate this show to all the Filipino journalists in Canada and around the world. The fight for free speech and free press by Maria Ressa, a Philippine American journalist known for her critical coverage of Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte. She was found guilty of cyber-libel of a wealthy businessman by a court on June 15 in a case against the news organization Rappler along with a former researcher, Reynaldo Santos Jr., for an article published in 2012. They are facing a maximum six years in prison and an almost $8,000 fine.

Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International say that her conviction is politically motivated to silence her and Rappler but the Duterte’s administration denies it.

The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines said it was a “dark day for the independent Philippine press”.

Former CNN correspondent Maria Ressa joins us to discuss the controversial cyber libel law, Duterte’s extrajudicial killings on his war on drugs, the vicious social media attacks from Duterte’s supporters online, and the future of independent journalism in the Philippines.

DISCUSSION:

  1. The closure of the largest television entertainment and news network ABS-CBN.
  2. The Anti Terrorism Law signed by President Duterte.
  3. Message to all Filipino journalists all over the world.

“I think we’re living through a very unique moment where again it proves that information is power.”

– Maria Ressa
